Since its inception, the Irish Hospitality Institute (IHI) has been committed to the belief that continuous professional development is vital for cultivating industry leaders and, by extension, for the future growth of the hospitality and tourism sectors.
To honour this belief, the IHI has established the John Toner Next Generation Award. This award recognises the exceptional contributions made throughout a distinguished career by past President and Fellow John Toner FIHI to tourism and hospitality across the island of Ireland.
The award will be presented annually to an individual who demonstrates a strong commitment to continuous professional development. This award aims to provide recipients with funding to enhance their skills and unlock their potential through a programme of their choosing.
Application Process
·The John Toner Next Generation Award application process will open on Wednesday, 2nd April 2025. MIHI Members will receive a link to the application platform, where you will be invited to create a login and commence the application process.
·The final closing date for applications is Wednesday, 23rd April 2025. Applications received outside this date will not be considered.
·Applications will be reviewed by IHI Education Panel and measured on their quality and how the programme selected will benefit the applicant. Once reviewed, applications will be short-listed to a maximum of 3-5 applicants.
·Successful applicants will be invited to attend a meeting with the IHI Education Panel on the Tuesday, 6th May 2025.
·One application per person in any given year is permitted.
·Funding is for a maximum of €2,500 which may include one or more programmes.
·The winner will be invited to receive their award at the President’s Dinner on Thursday, 15th May 2025 at The Anantara Hotel, Dublin.
Eligibility
This award is open to all fully paid MIHI members only. IHI membership must be maintained throughout the programme and for at least one year on completion.
Graduates (with less than three years’ experience post-graduation) as well as Students and Fellows are not eligible to apply.
Applicants must be residents of the island of Ireland.
If successfully awarded The John Toner Next Generation Award applicants are expected to remain working within the industry for the duration of the programme they attend.
Programme Criteria
Funding will only be awarded for programmes recognised on the Irish Framework of Qualifications or recognised educational institutions.
The programme must link the applicant’s current tourism or hospitality career and demonstrate how the selected programme(s) will support their professional development.
Online, in-person or hybrid programmes are all eligible.
The programme must commence within the calendar year awarded and be completed within 2 years from the date awarded.
Data Protection and Processing Notice
All applications and CVs submitted for The John Toner Next Generation Award will be kept for a period of 12 months.
Please notify us when submitting your application if you do not wish for your data to be held following the closure of the application process.
The IHI will hold and process the data provided by you strictly in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) under the legal basis of contractual necessity.
The data will be used to administer communication with you as a participant in The John Toner Next Generation Award.
T&Cs
Applicants may apply for more than one programme; however, funding is for a total of €2,500. It is not possible to transfer the funding to another person or programme. It is not possible to redeem its cash value.
The cost of the programme(s) will be paid directly by the IHI. If the programme(s) costs more than the award given, the successful applicant will pay the balance. If the cost of the programme(s) is less than the award the cost of the programme(s) will be paid and no further amount paid out.
The award is provided for tuition and does not include payment for time off work, travel or other out-of-pocket expenses.
